Koenigsegg nearly bought Saab last year. Fortunately the deal fell through, allowing the innovative Swedish hypercar manufacturer to develop the awesome Agera instead.

In essence an evolution of the CCX, instead of a fundamentally new design, the Agera sports identical dimensions and glass surfacing proportions to Koenigsegg's original hypercar, yet illumination is improved with LEDs and the general design language is more contemporary.

Despite the newfangled looks, all those traditional Koenigsegg character traits (a carbon-fibre and aluminium honeycomb chassis and suicidal rear-wheel drive) have been retained and given greater, intent courtesy of a surge in power output.

Spoilers and flat underbody generate 300kg of downforce at 250km/h.

Super(charged) V8

Although the 4.7l forced-induction V8 is carried over from the CCX, Agera benefits from additional power thanks to meticulous tuning work by Koenigsegg’s technicians.

The new car boasts 670kW, a full 69kW more than the standard CCX, yet still nearly 100kW short of the Bio-fuelled CCXR.

Peak rotational force is quite sufficient too (1 100Nm) and ensures the 1 284kg Agera accelerates past the 0-100km/h benchmark in a scant 3.1 seconds, before powering to a top speed of 389km/h.

Despite the Christmas-tree effect proliferation of LEDs, the new Agera  - it's Swedish for 'to act' - is a proper hypercar. 

Beautifully engineered

Don’t dismiss Koenigsegg’s latest hypercar as a simple power-to-weight ratio overkill engineering exercise either.

The Agera shifts power to the rear wheels via a custom-built sequential transmission, whilst behind each of those four wheels hides a proper carbon-ceramic brake set-up.

To ensure each Argera’s exhaust lasts nearly forever the gas-extraction plumbing is made from the highly corrosion-resistant superalloy, Iconel.

With the Agera’s fuel volume burden being divided into two tanks mounted either side of the car (for optimal balance); stowage space is at a premium. Koenigsegg will oblige with a set of tailor-made luggage for owners though.

Although more technical details are sure to be released as the covers come off the new Agera at the Geneva auto show today, it’s expected Koenigsegg will supply the hypercar market with only between 15 and 20 Ageras per year.
