The spotlight at Fiat's Auto Africa stand will be on the Italian carmaker's Sedici 4x4, which Fiat says will arrive here in 2007.

The Sedici name comes from the number 16 - four multiplied by four (4x4) is sixteen.

According to Fiat the Sedici's features make it the "ideal alternative" to segment C (Stilo-sized) cars and also to all other off-roaders currently on the market as the Sedici combines the driving satisfaction and handling of a compact car with the performance figures of an SUV.

The dimensions of this compact SUV are 411cm long and 162cm wide with a wheelbase of 250 cm.

The interior space within the Fiat Sedici can be changed to your own needs, mainly due to the independently reclinable and stackable rear seats.

The load compartment can be increased from 270 to 670 litres with the rear seat fully folded.

Under the bonnet there is 88kW 1.9 Multijet turbodiesel unit.

Fiat claims that the new Sedici will be more than capable to tackle decent off-road driving too.

The Fiat Sedici adopts a new on-demand 4x4 system with central differential and 3 operating modes that combines the performance of a true off-roader with the driving comfort of a road vehicle.

Fiat claims this set-up represents a blend of four wheel drive and front wheel drive systems and therefore exploits the best of both these systems.

When it goes on sale here next year its main rival will be the Daihatsu Terios.
