Mini Paceman headed for SA

Mini’s Sports Activity Coupe is headed for South Africa in 2013. The model line-up includes the standard Mini Cooper Paceman and Cooper S version.

Powered by a 1.6 petrol engine, the standard version is capable of 90kW at 6000rpm and 160Nm at 4250rpm. The Cooper S with twin-scroll turbocharger is tuned for 135kW at 5500rpm and 240Nm between 1600-5000rpm.

A 160kW John Cooper Works is in the pipeline.


The engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or auto with a claimed fuel consumption of 6.0 litres/100km for the standard version and 6.1 litres/100km for the Cooper S. The auto Cooper S is equipped with paddle shifts and can be ordered as an option for the standard variant.

An optional Sport button is available, which when activated, tweaks engine response and the power assistance provided by the steering.

Mini’s All4 all-wheel-drive system is available for the Cooper S Paceman. The system uses an electromagnetic centre differential to distribute drive between the front and rear axles. In normal driving situations, All4 diverts up to 50% of the engine’s power to the rear wheels, rising to as much as 100% in extreme conditions.

The Cooper S Paceman is capable of sprinting from 0 – 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds (7.8 seconds for the auto) and has a top speed of 217 km/h (212 km/h).

The standard version reaches 0 – 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds (11.5 seconds on the auto) and has a top speed of 192 km/h (184 km/h). 


The interior is said to have a premium look and feel, with a horizontally structured instrument panel supplementing the traditional large centre speedometer. Window switches are now in the door trims rather than the centre console.

A shorter version of the Countryman's multi-purpose centre rail is standard, while the full-length rail is available as an option. Load capacity stands at 330 litres, increasing to 1080 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, the centre rail, model-specific door sill lettering and a radio/CD audio system with aux socket.

The Paceman is the first member of the brand’s line-up to be identified by a rear nameplate. The new model is available in copper, red and blue while the roof and side-mirror caps can be painted in body colour, white or black.

Standard specification also includes light-alloy wheels, 16-inch for Cooper Paceman and 17-inch for the Cooper S. Customers will have access to optional 18 and 19-inch light-alloy wheels for all models.

The Paceman’s standard safety arsenal includes front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for both rows of seats.

The Mini Paceman will go on sale in South Africa in the second quarter of 2013.

    I personally will not be able to take any guy seriously if they drive/ own a Mini.

    I just wonder why anyone would seriously spend money on this compared to buying a BIGGER suv for probably less or equal, such as a Qashqai, iX35, etc. I saw a Mini Countryman the other day. So tiny, even the kids were squeezed in the back. And it doesn't even have any real ground clearance. Buy this and people will know you have to much money and very little sense
