2013-02-14 20:39

Mercedes-Benz is set to launch its stunning A-Class in South Africa. Ahead of its official launch the German automaker has released pricing for its new city hatchback which will be launched in April 2013.

Sales of the new A-Class commenced in Europe in September 2012 and a total of 90 000 orders have already been received.

Only front-wheel drive versions will be offered for now and we’ll have to wait awhile longer for the awesome AMG.

'WE INVENTED PREMIUM COMPACTS'

The A180 and A200 BlueEfficiency models are powered by a new 1.6 direct-injection turbo petrol engine capable of 90kW/200Nm in the A 180 and 115kW/250Nm in the A200.

The A250 Sport is powered by two-litre petrol engine capable of 155kW/350Nm.

The diesel A 180CDI BlueEfficiency is said to be the most efficient model in the range. It’s powered by a  80kW/260Nm 1.5 turbodiesel which the automaker claims can produce a fuel consumption figure kof 3.8 litres/100km. For those seeing more diesel grunt there's 2.1 A 220 CDI capable of 125kW and 350Nm.

Every engines will be mated to a six-speed manual though the A 180 CDI can be fitted with a seven-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes SA CEO Martin Zimmermann said:  “The A-Class falls in a very competitive segment but Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to this segment - we invented it more than 15 years ago with the first A-Class. With our latest introductions to the compact car segment we have an opportunity to attract young and discerning consumers looking for power and performance embodied in a sporty and stylish design, with all the traditional Mercedes-Benz values of safety and reliability."

Mercedes-Benz head of design and development for compact cars, Joerg Prigl, said: “No other car in this segment is as progressive and sporty as the new A-Class."

The pricing is so good. This car is gonna clean up. It will be my first merc. Wonder how much the AMG pack will be extra.

      marcus.mokoena.9 - 2013-02-15 11:07

agree 100%. Merc is learning how price cars from the Koreans. With pricing like this I think the golf 7, A3 and 1-series are going to wee their pants and stay grounded in dealership floors because this car looks super cool and its a merc. I even think this car is also a threat to its sibling the c-class. The price really a surprise.

      thando.gqabaza - 2013-02-15 11:21

My take is different - while the prices look good compared to VW , Audi etc, they could be lower still. We are still getting screwed in this country.

      Killbot79 - 2013-02-15 12:17

Agreed Thando, but now we will be screwed less than what VW would screw us.

      raath - 2013-02-15 15:15

These are the base prices - you still need to add options

      PeterCarvell - 2013-02-16 02:41

I am not so sure after watching some review videos on Youtube. The Top of the range A250 is R40k more than the current top of the range Audi but is .3 seconds slower. From the reviews I also get that the interior is not as good as the Audi's and the drive is not as good as the BMW 1 series. So I think although it looks hot and they will sell bucket loads, it has a fight on it's hands.

Can't wait for my A220 Cdi. My first merc. Love the shape.

  • erik.p.vanwyk - 2013-02-15 08:49

Wow, expected it to cost way more. Merc is serious about getting decent market share. This is very temting.

  • shakes.majola.5 - 2013-02-15 09:19

@graeme Not A1 but in competition with A3

  • Killbot79 - 2013-02-15 10:28

Cheaper than a golf and 1000 times better looking, and it's a premium car with premium pricing, golf is a non-premium car with premium pricing. I would take this car any day, BMW 1 series has seious competition.

  • redlorri - 2013-02-15 10:35

Good competition for VW - although I am super happy with my Mk7!

      Killbot79 - 2013-02-15 12:15

They are not supposed to be competition, Audi A3 and BMW 1 series is competition to this, Golf is more in line with Ford Focus and Toyota Auris. VW have got the plot wrong.

  • jarrydks - 2013-02-15 11:18

Excellent pricing. As what most people are commenting - Merc is going to see a whole lot of new clientele claiming their "first Merc". The potential marketing is potentially huge. Well done to Merc.

      Killbot79 - 2013-02-15 12:14

I am seriously considering one myself, even if I have to pick one up as a demo or secondhand

  • stampalex - 2013-02-15 11:45

Wow - agressive pricing - definite option for me

  • afrikeni - 2013-02-15 14:34

Just hope the list of necessary "extras" will not be as long as my arm, otherwise good pricing!

  • shaun.burrell.56 - 2013-02-15 14:51

Love this car, a great 2nd Merc

  • imfene.imfene - 2013-02-15 15:28

Thanks, but I'll stick with my Alfa Giulietta - 10 times sexier than this thing...

  • Kwashic - 2013-02-15 16:07

If an option is necessary then it's not an option ....so if these prices can give you a good basic car. Then thanks to MBSA for finally righting so many wrongs.

  • neil.russell.94 - 2013-02-15 18:23

Watch this if you think this car has more than an expensive badge glued on it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1n6vPVYblw

  • Bantsijang - 2013-02-15 20:20

    nice sprinter....

  • Sthere - 2013-02-15 22:04

heard the baby AMG will come with more than 240 kw! Hope it wont cost an arm and a leg!!!

      Threetimeschampions - 2013-02-16 04:23

Overrated, 0-100kmin 5.1s according to merc, why bother with 4matic

  • Threetimeschampions - 2013-02-16 04:19

Audi, BMW, Mercedes, price fixing anybody? Come on people, surely you don't believe there is not some colusion here?

      shelvine - 2013-02-19 12:44

but no one is doing any thing about it. they claim its out import taxes but cars that is made here and exported to europe still costs cheaper there. so wtf.

  • Makaveli - 2013-02-16 16:40

The pricing is a big surprise, I expect this to steal lot of sales from the focus, golf, 1 series and the a3. I'm tempted to cancel my order for the Focus ST and go for the A250.

  • dane.bezuidenhout - 2013-02-16 16:50

Add "extras" like auto, leather, decent sound, Xenon, climate control and sport kit to make it look decent and you'll be at R370k, just like that, with a less powerful engine than the equivalent A3 or 1 series. It is only "well priced" compared to something like an SLK.

      nitro.nori.5 - 2013-02-18 10:50

Neither BMW, Audi or Golf offer any of the mentioned options standard anyway and the 1.2 A3 starts at 267K, BMW 116i at 273K, so the Merc is in the same ball park. Engine wise Audi is only 77kw and is 3 door, the bmw churns out a 100kw, so again is within the ball park. To say that a 1600 capable of a maximum 115kw is under powered shows your lack of knowledge of modern engine tech where the focus is on efficiency not just power. If you want power you are looking in the wrong segment. It is actually competitive when you add in the 6yr/100000km full maintenance plan in as well. It does actually look decent in standard form anyway versus the 1 or A3 anyway.

      dane.bezuidenhout - 2013-02-18 17:21

Yes, as I implied, pricing is in same ballpark. Not cheaper. I didn't say it was underpowered, I said it had less power. You've read all sorts of things into my comment, haven't you? I guess "looking decent" is subjective...

  • Derek - 2013-02-16 19:40

It has been out here in the UK since Dec - just taken A200 CDI AMG for test drive today. Great drive and definitely looks better than the new A3 and Golf! Could have done without the run flats though! Interior is brilliant and the Harmon Kardon sound system is a must! Just as a matter of interest for you guys in SA, cost of A200 CDI AMG with full house, is £31 500 incl - that's about R350 000. Order has been placed!!
