VIDEO UPDATE: Mercedes-AMG unveils its GT

AFFALTERBACH, Germany – Mercedes has launched the second car under its new sports car brand. Meet the new Mercedes-AMG GT.

The German automaker says its first product was a racing car, meaning the new GT carries the long-standing heritage and also moves the company into a “top-class sports-car segment”.

Earlier in 2014, Mercedes revealed a peek at the GT's interior but merely hinted of the car's V8 engine. The car has now made its global debut at the AMG plant in Affalterbach (September 9 2014).

It’s the second sports-car developed in-house by Mercedes-AMG, which says the car’s front mid-engine concept with transaxle and the aluminium construction has created a dynamic driving mchine while the newly AMG four-litre V8 biturbo engine emphasises AMG’s driving performance.

Mercedes claims the GT has the first sports-car engine with internally mounted turbochargers while the dry-sump lubrication is configured in two power ratings: as a GT with 344kW and as a GT S with 380kW.

SPORTY EMOTION

So, what is the GT? Mercedes-AMG explained: “The new GT combines driving dynamics and first-class racetrack performance with everyday practicality, and efficiency that sets new standards in the segment.”

Power figures from the V8 in the GT S (380kW/650Nm) means the car reaches 100km/h in 3.8sec and has a claimed top speed of 310km/h. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 9.3 litres/100km and 219g/km CO2 emissions.

The GT model is good for 344kW/600Nm, reaches 100km/h in four seconds and has a claimed top speed of 304km/h; fuel consumption is given as 9.4 litres/100km with 216g/km CO2 emissions.

It has, Amg says, a practical tail hatch for an easily accessible luggage compartment and various "intelligent drive" assistance systems. Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG, said: "With the new GT we're positioning Mercedes-AMG even more aggressively as a dynamic sports-car brand. With its technological substance, the GT fulfils our high aspirations with regard to driving dynamics, agility and sportiness.'

The automaker further believes that the combination of the aluminium spaceframe, V8 biturbo engine and dry-sump lubrication, seven-speed dual clutch transmission, locking differential, sports suspension with aluminium double-wishbone suspension and the low kerb weight of 1540kg makes the car’s for racetrack performance possible.

SENSUAL PURITY

Daimler AG’s design vice-president Gorden Wagener said: "The GT is a sports car in its purest form. Breathtaking proportions, powerfully sculpted surfaces and flowing lines make the new AMG a contemporary sports-car which embodies the spirit of the glorious Mercedes sports cars. The GT is a consummate combination of beauty and intelligence."

The two-seater is characterised by hallmark rear-wheel drive proportions. The mid-engine ensures optimum weight distribution, while the long bonnet with its pronounced power domes, the large wheels, and broad tail create the distinctive looks.
