Merc fires off CLS Shooting Brake

Mercedes-Benz takes a stab at yet another niche market with the reveal of its CLS Shooting Brake, which the automaker said is “quite clearly a coupé”. It’s definitely lovely to look at…

According to Merc CEO, Dr. Dieter Zetsche: "Any memorable machine is equal parts art and science. A car has to first deliver in function – the ticket of entry – and then in fascination: the ticket to real excitement. The CLS Shooting Brake excels on both accounts – unlike any other car in the market".

South African fans will be able to experience the CLS Shooting Brake from the first quarter of 2013, Mercedes-Benz SA confirmed.

CLEVER MERC 'WAGON'

Until then, we’ll have to make do with pictures that show the Shooting Brake to have a long bonnet, frameless side windows on a relatively narrow glasshouse and a roof that slopes dramatically to the rear. Mercedes describes it as a “sports car with a large tailgate”. We think that’s quite novel, much like the CLS Coupe was when it was first launched in 2004.

Apart from its stand-out styling, the CLS “wagon” also has a few more distinctive features such as a wooden luggage compartment floor finished in American cherry tree wood veneer sheets with darker smoked oak inserts and brushed aluminium rails and rubber inserts to protect the wood and prevent your goods from sliding around.

There’s a “regular” luggage compartment finished with carpet, too, although the individualisation options on the Shooting Brake extend to more than just the boot. There’s also a range of interior trim colours and designs, leather finishes and wood types to choose from and AMG-sourced trinkets to add.

This CLS derivative’s purpose is skewed towards practicality with dimensions of 4956mm (length), 1881mm (width) and 1413mm (height) while the load volume extends from 590 to 1550 litres. The standard rear air suspension also helps to ensure the CLS’s road holding is geared towards sportier driving, even when loaded.

The CLS Shooting Brake is available with four engine variants – two diesel engines and two petrol engines – with 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmissions as well as the Eco start/stop function standard to all. In Europe, the range consists of BlueEfficiency only engines starting with CLS 250 CDI, CLS 350 and 350 CDI and the V8 CLS 500.
