Mazda crossover SUV heads for SA

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Mazda has launched its a new Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV in Japan with plans to launch it in South Africa.

The new model is is available in two engine options, Skyactiv-D 2.2 diesel and Skyactiv-G 2.0 petrol.

The all-new CX-5 is the first model to adopt Mazda's Skyactiv technology. In terms of design, the CX-5 is the first model to fully embody Mazda's new design theme, Kodo - Soul of Motion.

Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's president and CEO, said: "Being environmentally friendly is a given. We want to offer outstanding environmental and safety performance with driving enjoyment. To ensure that, Mazda has completely renewed all the basic elements of the car, from the engine and transmission to the body and chassis.

STYLISH SUV: Mazda's CX-5 looks quite sporty especially in comparison to the ageing CX-7.

"The first of Mazda's new generation of products to fully incorporate Skyactiv is the CX-5. As we launch new products, Mazda will continue to offer all customers driving enjoyment combined with outstanding environmental and safety performance," he said.

The petrol variant is capable of 121kW and 210Nm, while the 2.2 turbodiesel unites produces 110kW and 380Nm or 129kW and 420Nm. The petrol unit has a claimed fuel consumption of 6 l/100km and the 100kW diesel unit has a claimed 4.5 l/100km.

SMART TECH: The CX-5 features a Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), which aims to mitigate the damage from a collision by automatically controlling brake operation.

The interior is said offer generous boot space and rear legroom and a premium feel.

The Mazda Cx-5 is due in South Africa later in 2012.
