The fastest Audi convertible yet has just launched in South Africa and if you want real exclusivity, take a look at the car... and its price.
The Audi R8 coupe arrived in South Africa back in 2007 with a V8 engine and better looks than most supermodels and then, in 2009, followed the 386kW coupe, still called the R8 but with a V10 engine. Now that model has dropped its top to become a convertible with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed R tronic sequential transmission.
And here's what they'll cost...
Audi R8 V10 Spyder 6-speed manual - R2 104 000.
Audi R8 V10 Spyder 6-speed R tronic - R2 149 000.
Audi has stuck with conventional waterproof fabric for the foldilng roof and for those to whom such things matter, it'll take 19 seconds in either direction, folding under a carbon fibre lid. It's operation is allowed up to 50km/h.
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE
A nice touch is Bluetooth communications; no, we know that's not unusul, but putting a microphone in each seat belt and a third in the roof lining is. You want to be able to talk at 300km/h, don't you?
The R8 Spyder has the same 5204cc V10 engine as in the coupe - 386kW at 8000rpm and torque peak of 530Nm at 6500rpm. It also drives through all four wheels, which helps to achieve its 0-100km/h time of 4.1sec and keeps the car steady at its top speed of 313km/h.
Standard equipment includes, satnav, rearview camera, 19" rims, B&O sound system, heatable seats and full leather trim.
