Kia flagship to take on BMW

2012-02-29 08:13

Kia has revealed the latest batch of photographs of its new flagship sedan to be launched during the first half of 2012 year in Korea.

The new K9 is the Korean automaker's first rear-wheel drive sedan and derives its name from Kia’s domestic market "K" series range of passenger cars which includes the Optima.

The K9’s exterior carries Kia’s evolving design DNA, with its "‘tiger-nose" radiator grille, diode lights and a voluminous hood.  Viewed from the front, the car presents an imposing and characterful image... not to mention more than a passing resemblance to BMW's 5 Series GT.

Kia K9

GOING GREEK: The letter "K" not only represents Kia and its home country, Korea, but also refers to the Greek word "kratos" which means powerful, domination and reign.

Kia has yet to reveal any real technical information but the new model will share a its platform with Hyundai's Genesis sedan. This means it could feature the same range of petrol engines, which includes a 193kW 3.3 V6, 213kW 3.8 V6 and 269kW 4.6 V8.

Soon-Nam Lee, director of the overseas marketing group, said: “The K9 is our first rear-wheel drive sedan, created without compromise in its design, driving performance and new technologies. It sets a whole new level of standards and values in the large sedan segment, and its design will be another Kia demonstration of our brand’s power to surprise."

Kia has yet to designate a name for export markets and will reveal its global launch date later in 2012.

If I'm in the market for a luxury executive marque, why would I pass BMW, MERCEDES-BENZ, AUDI, or LEXUS ????????? surely when buying this class of car price is of no matter...

      Barry - 2012-02-29 16:04

Aside from the odd looking nose and the 7 series inspired rear. I think Kia should be worthy of consideration considering how far they have come in both design and quality. If I had the cash I would certainly be considering this car purely because a lot of the extra's the German trio and Lexus provide with a hefty price tag, Kia would supply either included in the whole package or at a cheaper rate. (of course i'm just assuming here)

I use to work for Toyota as a salesperson. You pay so a huge premium for just walking into the showroom...I think you will find alot more value with Hyudai and Kia, obviously depending on what you are looking for...Kia don't do bakkies , but there passenger cars are awesome.

      rowen.loretz - 2012-02-29 22:46

Well, there are new things coming...it is exciting to see something different, everyone that thinks much of himself has a BMW , AUDI or Merc.... besides I really believe the Korean cars are doing very well and they are expanding by entering new niche markets. They are really competitive and reasonably priced too

  • Stig - 2012-02-29 10:07

Kia are now coming out of the closet and confirmed what we've suspecting all along that they aim to give the chinese a run for their money, hope BMW sue them.what a cheap looking car

      Dean - 2012-02-29 11:43

What are you talking about. There is nothing of a BMW in this car.

      Stig - 2012-02-29 12:24

I see the chinese brigade is out on full force

      ronheidtmann - 2012-02-29 13:14

Are you aware that Kia is South Korean, not Chinese!

      rowen.loretz - 2012-02-29 22:48

huge difference between Koream and Chinese cars. I can't think of one good chinese car...they so far behind when it comes to cars

  • Roger - 2012-02-29 10:20

      Frank - 2012-02-29 12:12

my bulldogs bum looks better than that disastrous gt thing.

  • wayne.warren83 - 2012-02-29 12:08

well it's not the prettiest thing I've ever seen

  • Kendall - 2012-02-29 12:38

Good on you Kia. Nice looking car anything that will overule a BM goes for me.

  • ronheidtmann - 2012-02-29 13:03

If they bring it into SA I'd gladly buy one!

  • Trevor - 2012-02-29 13:06

Once again, Koreans are blatantly copying the Germans...come on, from the Bangle ass to the gentle styling lines, the side view is a dead give away....come on, give us something new, not a copy using cheaper materials...

      Peter - 2012-02-29 17:44

@ Trevor, had a look at a new KIA lately? First class quality - not cheap materials. Brilliant cars with standard features that make their German counterparts blush and at a considerably lower price tag.

      rowen.loretz - 2012-02-29 22:41

Audi 's previous head designer now works for Kia...so you may find bits of german in it.

  • Elekanyani - 2012-02-29 13:43

maybe you should look at this link to find out why Kia is suddenly designing such great car!!!.http://www.conceptcaronline.com/news/cardesignnews.php?newsid=44

  • Nitro - 2012-02-29 15:15

Kia has got to go a long way to compete with BMW 5, Merc E, Audi A6, Jag XF, Lexus GS. If you are an executive, will you consider a Kia. It is about brand snobbery in this price bracket. Maybe they can steal some buyers who have a 3/C/A4/IS but cannot see them challenging the big boys.

      Dean - 2012-02-29 16:21

The same was said about Lexus. And the Koreans are already gaining ground on the Japs.

  • Blane - 2012-02-29 18:38

Bring Mechanic With , thats all I have to say.

  • Sicebi - 2012-02-29 21:26

BMW 5 Series GT, the 7 Series and Lexus GS had a threesome and this is the result.

  • Hannes - 2012-02-29 23:34

Kia's products may be improving and even competitive, but their service at their outlets is still pathetic. Recently had two incidents so no thank you. First understand your market and the customer, then try to compete with the big ones.

  • Dumisani - 2012-03-01 11:35

One big problem, its still NOT a BMW!!!

  • Lourens - 2012-03-01 16:00

wtf? It looks like a copy of the bmw 7 series!! Don't blame them though

  • Tino - 2012-03-02 14:12

All engines NA old crap, where is the turbo's Kia?

  • Fritz - 2012-03-05 13:18

who needs a big car like this or bmw (7 series) audi (a7,a8) merc(s)? you only buy them for the image. I am a kia fan but i think they gonna loose this fight in the first few rounds.

  • phathuchicos - 2012-03-05 22:03

BMW should consider taking legal actions against chinese and these koreans who can't come up withtheir own unique design...

      phathuchicos - 2012-03-05 22:06

how embarrassing i had so much faith in Kia with their new design direction...
