SEOUL, Korea - Hyundai has revealed its latest mid-engined model – an assertively-styled high-performance coupe concept named ‘RM15’ (Racing Midship 2015).

The lightweight two-seat concept, unveiled at the 2015 Seoul auto show, could pave the way for a future high-performance sports car.

The RM15 features an aluminium frame with carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) panels, which together help to achieve a significant weight reduction compared to a conventional all-steel vehicle.

The body panels are painted in the signature colours of automaker  (black, red and mid-blue) which also feature on its WRC i20 rally car.

Based on the Veloster RM, shown at 2014 Korean auto show in Busan, the new RM15, the automaker says, features a host of modifications that boost its performance, handling and efficiency.

According to Hyundai: "Total weight is reduced to 1260kg, weight distribution is more evenly balanced (43% front, 57% rear), the centre of gravity is just 491mm from the ground and aerodynamic downforce is 24kg at 200km/h, aided by a competitive lift-coefficient."

It's powered by Hyundai’s Theta two-litre T-GDI turbocharged petrol mounted transversely behind the cabin and ahead of the rear axle. New vertical air-intakes along its flanks, ahead of the rear wheel arches, increase cooling airflow within the engine bay and enhance engine efficiency.

The four-cylinder turbocharged unit is capable of 224kW/383Nm mated to a six-speed manual, driving power to the rear wheels. It's T-GDI unit enables it to sprint from 0-100km in 4.7 seconds.

The senior vice president and head of high performance vehicle development centre at Hyundai, Joonhong Park, said: "The RM15 is another bold statement of the progressive spirit of Hyundai Motor, illustrating what we can achieve when we channel our passion and enthusiasm into a product that is not limited by convention.

“I’m very proud to unveil the RM15 at our home motor show, where visitors have become used to seeing Hyundai Motor confidently give expression to its creative and engineering talents and energies. We intend to demonstrate our progress with high-performance technologies with other exciting prototype projects in the near future”.
