Hottest Cayman yet for SA: 283kW GT4

Porsche will extend its local Cayman line-up with the reveal of the Cayman GT4 later in 2015 - the first Cayman coupe to have Porsche's GT badge on its tail.

The Porsche Cayman GT4 will make its world debut at the March 2015 Geneva auto show; the first deliveries are expected to arrive in South Africa mid-2015. The price? The Cayman GT4 will retail for R1 136 000*... and you can order one now.

The new GT4 follows the conceptual tradition of other top Porsche models, among them the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder.

BLISTERING PACE

It is powered by a 283kW 3.8-litre flat-six engine derived from the 911 Carrera S. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox with what Porsche calls "dynamic gearbox mounts". There's currently no PDK option.

The Cayman GT4 can accelerate to 100km/h in 4.4sec and reach 295km/h. Its pace enabled it to lap lap Germay's iconic Nurburgring circuit in 7min40 which, according to Porsche, "positions the Cayman GT4 as the new benchmark at the top of its market segment". Interestingly, SEAT's new not-hatch Cupra takes less than 20sec longer...

Fuel consumption is rated at 10.3 litres/100km with emissions of 238g/km. It weighs 1340kg, the same as a Cayman S, and Porsche promises more radical two-door sports cars in future, developed at its motorsport department in Weissach, Germany.

According to Porsche: "The engine, chassis, brakes and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics yet the top Cayman still retains the versatility and everyday utility that are typical of a two-seat Porsche coupe."

HOT DESIGN

The Cayman GT4 is differentiated from the standard version through its lower suspension (30mm), three distinctive inlet openings at the front and a large fixed wing. Its suspension and braking components are from the 911 GT3.

According to Porsche, its GT4 aero package is designed "not only to reduce lift but also generate downforce". Standard kit includes bi-xenon headlights, a sport exhaust, 20" alloy rims, torque vectoring, mechanical limited-slip differential, Sport Chrono package (with dynamic engine mounts), leather interior (including sports seats) and a new, compact GT steering wheel.

Optional extras include ceramic brakes, carbon-fibre seats, a custom Sport Chrono package with a unique Track Precision app and a Club Sport package (includes roll-cage).

*The Porsche Cayman GT4 is sold with a three-year drive plan.
