Hot Ghibli blows in from Maserati

Maserati has released the first official images of its upcoming four-door sports sedan in advance of its debut at the 2013 Shanghai auto show.

The all-new Ghibli, its maker says, will break ground with a sportier character than the larger Quattroporte launched at the beginning of 2013.

The Ghibli, the word meaning hot, dust-carrying desert wind in North Africa, will be available with a choice of two turbocharged three-litre V6 engines - one of them the first Maserati diesel - an eight-speed auto transmission and rear-wheel or the new Q4 all-wheel drive.

It is, the automaker says, its first sedan in this segment "to reflect the company’s belief that a growing number of premium executive-car buyers want to make an individual statement through a car that is distinctive, elegant and luxurious".

The car will play a significant role in Maserati’s growth plan to sell 50 000 cars a year.
