Honda CEO Takanobu Ito has outlined a plan involving product, business and technology developments that will drive the automaker’s growth until 2017.
Ito noted this would be achieved by a range of technological advancements in Honda’s automotive, energy and mobility products that would drive its customer numbers by 60% from 23.9 to 39-million by 2017.

New products envisaged by Ito include the new Civic Type R in 2015, a new compact SUV (ostensibly to slow below the CR-V), a fuel-cell electric vehicle for selected markets by 2015 and a new high-performance sports motorcycle based on the automaker’s MotoGP machines.
Takanobu confirmed the next-generation Type R and said the hot hatch would incorporate technologies inspired by the automaker’s World Touring Car championship campaign. Honda believes it will become the fastest front-wheel drive vehicle in the field when it is introduced in 2015.
The automaker is also developing a new super-sports motorcycle with technologies derived from its MotoGP machines. This bike, Honda said, would deliver the same passion and excitement as the RC30 (VFR750R) super sports bike created when it was introduced in 1987.
Starting in 2015, Honda will also launch an all-new fuel-cell electric model in Japan, the US and Europe.
More relevant to Honda fans in South Africa (given the automaker’s current hybrid range on sale here) is its plan to introduce three new hybrid systems, ranging from a compact one-motor system to a high-output, performance-orientated, three-motor system.
The three-motor sport hybrid system will be applied to the new NSX, Honda added.
