Nissan's GT-R badge celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Without a doubt, it is one of the most iconic cars in motoring history, and also known as a 'supercar killer'.

The GT-R spans five decades and remains a sought-after vehicle.

This was evident at the 10th anniversary of the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb in Knysna earlier in May. The number of Nissan GT-R models represented, both as new and older cars, was astounding, much to the crowd's delight.

The GT-R badge was first seen adorning 1969 Nissan Skyline Coupe as a unique trim level known as the 2000 GT-R. It was designed to showcase the automaker's motorsport pedigree in it's road cars.

Earlier this year, Wheels24 contributor Ferdi de Vos paid tribute to the GT-R, and shared some history. He wrote: "While this nickname strictly speaking refers to the R32 version of the iconic Skyline GT-R range, it has by now been universally accepted to describe any model wearing the GT-R moniker.

"It was 50 years ago that the first version of "Godzilla" was released to dealers – giving birth to an iconic nameplate which spawned a series of halo GT cars and ultimately became a marque in its own right."
