For the first time in 2019, new vehicle sales in April showed positive growth compared to the corresponding month in 2018.
The year kicked off with sales being down year-on-year but despite April being a traditionally weak month for sales, it proved to be the first month of the year that sales picked up rather than its projected decline.
The light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment is down compared to April 2018 though still remained a good month for bakkie sales. Our top ten list of best-selling bakkies returned a total sales figure of 40 442 units during the first four months of the year.
The Toyota Hilux lead the charge as South Africa's undisputed bakkie king.
The Hilux returned a sales figure of 12 961 units sold, according to Naamsa, and is followed by the Ford Ranger on 8783 units. The Nissan NP200, despite dropping a few sales in April, retains its overall third spot with 6341 units sold, ahead of the Isuzu D-Max/KB on 5127 units.
The Nissan NP300/Hardbody sits pretty in fifth place on 3106 units, ahead of the Volkswagen Amarok on 1029 units.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up (879 units), GWM Steed (681 units) and Nissan Navara (582 units) bring up the rear.
