GM and Hot Wheels' toy joy ride

General Motors and California-based Mattel's Hot Wheels brand have teamed up to create the Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Special Edition - the first time the iconic toy brand has worked with an automaker to design and produce a production car.

Felix Holst, vice-president for design at Hot Wheels, said: "It's the first time a fan can go out and buy a real Hot Wheels car that they can drive.” (See video below.)

LIMITED EDITION

The Detroit News reported that Chevrolet would roll out the limited-edition car in early 2013. Extras such as a kinetic blue metallic exterior accented by the red Hot Wheels flame logo on the front wings and embroidered on the front leather seats will cost an equivalent of about R60 600.

The special edition car with red-lined wheels and special graphics is available as a coupe or convertible in the 2LT (V6 engine) and 2SS (V8 engine) trims.

The Camaro has sold more as a toy compared to actual production cars which were introduced in 1967.

The special edition vehicle, with the exterior look of the Camaro ZL1, is scheduled for production from January-June 2013. Chevrolet dealers will begin taking orders from November 1, 2012 and it will be available to buyers in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Europe and the Middle East.

The toy-turned-real-life car will make its debut at the trade-only 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

"I saw the car last week and it is beautiful," Holst said. "It’s fantastic. It really oozes Hot Wheels without being too over the top."

NO TOYING AROUND

It was just before the SEMA in 2010 when brainstorming for building a full-size Hot Wheels car began. The two companies have worked together for more than 40 years and Holst said Hot Wheels designers showed concept ideas to Chevy designers during that event. They collaborated to design a full-size concept Hot Wheels Camaro that was shown at last year's SEMA to rave reviews, the DetNews reported.

John Fitzpatrick, marketing manager for Chevrolet Performance cars, said: "We wanted something to stand out that people would notice that would really show off the lines of the Camaro and tie back into the original Hot Wheels car.”
