LONDON, England - If you're in the market for a frugal hatchback Chev/Opel/Vauxhall have created its most fuel efficient Corsa yet.
The new model isn't headed for South Africa but here's what's on offer for UK fans of the popular hatchback and its remarkable fuel savings.
The 70kW 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX has a claimed awesome fuel consumption of 2.8 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 88g/km. Maximum torque is 190Nm f(rom 1750 to 3250rpm) and it propels the hatch from 0-100km in 12.3sec run out of puff at 175km/h.
NEW TRANSMISSIONS
This equates to saving 20 teaspoons-worth of fuel/100km and a six g/km improvement over the 2011 Corsa 1.3 CDTi ecoFLEX (2.9 litres/100km and CO2 94g/km).
Mike Ableson, vice-president of engineering at Vauxhall, said: "In just five years, from the first Corsa ecoFLEX to today, we have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 26%. Our customers appreciate this, as does the environment."
A number of enhancements have been made to reduce consumption and emissions. The turbodiesel is equipped with a variable displacement oil pump which varies volume depending on the load in order to reduce the energy needed for oil circulation.
The use of low-viscosity transmission oil also contributes to efficient fuel consumption. Engine mapping and control have been adjusted.
From November 2012 the Corsa diesel will sport the automaker’s next generation manual transmissions which it claims will be more precise and offer smoother shifts.
New 185/65 R15 low rolling-resistance tyres have been added.
