Fresh changes light up Lumina

Chevrolet’s big V8 Luminas have been tweaked to deliver, the automaker says, better ride and handling and more secure braking.

The signature sedan and Ute have been imbued with a number of enhancements to pep up the range going into 2013.

SUSPENSION PACKAGE, HUGE BRAKES

A big-ticket item on the list of improvements is the introduction of a sport suspension package that has stiffer stabiliser bars and tuned shock-absorbers to improve the muscle cars’ handling.

The Luminas now ride on 19” alloys shod with “ultra high-performance low-profile tyres” while the the front brakes have also been updated. Four-piston, two-piece Brembo aluminium callipers grip the ventilated 355mm diameter discs.

As for cosmetic enhancements, a chromed belt line has been added to the sedan.

The mantra for the local Chev flagship remains “bigger is better” so its entertaining all-aluminium six-litre V8 with multi-point fuel injection is unchanged. Mated to the manual transmission, it produces 270kW (260kW on the six-speed automatic) and 530Nm of torque.

As befits its status within the Chevrolet SA range, the Luminas come with an Executive trim level that adds leather sport seats with electronic adjustment for the driver, auto aircon, cruise control and a driving information centre.

Safety features include six airbags on both the sedan and Ute versions, along with anti-locking brakes with brake force distribution and stability and traction control systems.

The Lumina and Lumina Ute are covered by a five-year or 120 000km warranty with roadside assistance and a three-year or 60 000km service plan. Service intervals are set at 15 000km (or one year).
