First Pug 4x4 arrives in SA!

Combining Peugeot's new design language with rugged all-terrain underpinnings, Peugeot's launches its first 4x4 in South Africa in June 2012

The 4008 joins the 3008 in Peugeot’s SUV/MPV portfolio and follows French automaker rivals Citroen's C4 Aircross. The 4008 is offered in two specification levels, Active and Allure, with both models only offered in all-wheel drive guise.

The new model is powered by a normally aspirated 2.0 petrol engine. The four-cylinder unit is capable of 110kW at 6000rpm with a torque peak of 197 Nm at 4200 r/min. The engine is mated to a six-speed CVT and has a claimed fuel consumption of 8.1-litres/100 km with CO2 emissions rated at 191 g/km.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

The new model shares mechanical underpinnings with the C4 Aircross and the Mitsubishi ASX crossover launched in South Africa in September, 2011.

The all-wheel drive system offers a choice of three driving modes: two-wheel, four-wheel and locked four-wheel drive. Two-wheel drive mode is ideal for dry surfaces with ample traction and offered the most economy.

Four-wheel drive mode controls torque distribution between the front and rear axles. The control unit employs sensors to evaluate the driving conditions and splits power between the front and rear drive wheels accordingly.

The 4WD Lock mode, ensures continued traction over demanding terrain as all four wheels are constantly employed to maintain grip, even when traction is compromised.

At low speeds, 50% of torque will be channeled to the rear wheels and up to 80% available to the rear wheels in extreme conditions.

The new model accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 10.9 seconds with a top speed of 188 km/h.

Standard equipment available on both models includes 18-inch alloy wheels, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, seven airbags, climate control, auto-headlights and windscreen wipers.

The Allure specification adds a glass roof, roof bars, leather upholstery, LED lighting, and heated, power adjustable seats to the 4008 package.

Francis Harnie, managing director of Peugeot South Africa, said: “The arrival of the 4008 allows Peugeot to participate in the growing compact SUV market for the first time. It’s a particularly popular segment in SA, where active and outdoor lifestyles favour the versatility and all-terrain capability of an SUV.

“While our 3008 focuses on versatility and practicality in the two-wheel drive context,  and also offers a diesel derivative, the 4008 now brings true 4x4 capability to the Peugeot family,” he said.

The new model has a number of storage options - a refrigerated globe compartment, two cup holders between the front seats, two cup holders under the rear armrest and storage pockets and nets behind the front seats.

The front armrest incorporates further storage space, as well as housing a 12V auxiliary power socket, a mini-jack socket and a USB port. The front doors also offer side storage compartments that are able to accommodate 1.5-litre bottles.
