Mercedes-Benz debuted its S 500 V6 plug-in hybrid at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show. It's the third hybrid in the new S-Class range and claims a fuel consumption of three litres/100 km! Did we mention it has 820Nm on tap?

FRANKFURT, Germany -  Mercedes-Benz debuts its S 500 Plug-in hybrid at the 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show. The new model joins the S 400 hybrid and S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid.

Head of Mercedes-Benz cars product engineering boss Thomas Weber said: "With this car Mercedes-Benz has set another milestone on the road to emissions-free mobility on the basis of our modular hybrid matrix. In this way the S-Class turns into a genuine three-litre car with generous space and superlative drive-system comfort."

10X ENERGY

The battery for the hybrid's 80kW/340Nm electric motor has a claimed electric driving range of 30km and the motor is combined with a 245kW/480Nm three-lite V6 turbocharged petrol and fuel consumption is rated at three litres/100km with C02 emissions of 69g/km.

The luxury hybrid has a combined torque figure of 820Nm and the new high-voltage lithium-ion battery stores 10 times the energy of similar battery packs.

Four hybrid modes can be selected – Hybrid,  E-Mode (battery only), E-Save (fully charged battery is reserved to be able to drive on electric power alone later) and Charge (battery is charged while driving).

The S500 is capable of reaching 0-100km/h in 5.5sec and 250 km/h.
