Citroën launches diesel C3

Citroën South Africa has expanded its C3 hatchback range with the introduction of a CO2 tax-beating turbodiesel engine.

A limited number of 1.4-litre turbodiesel units were imported to test the South African market; now Citroën has taken the plunge with the release of a 1.6-litre HDi 90 turbodiesel model.

The 1.4 delivered 50kW and 160Nm; the bigger engine makes 66kW and 215Nm. Drive is to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and top speed is 180km/h.

Perhaps more importantly, it has a CO2 emissions rating of 110g/km, which means it escapes the recently introduced South African carbon emissions tax.

The new HDi is finished in Seduction trim and costs R205 900.

In making the announcement, Citroën also noted that the range-topping 1.6 VTi Exclusive had been bolstered with a hi-fi pack and 17" alloy rims.

The hi-fii pack adds a seventh speaker in the central part of the fascia and a sub-woofer (that reduces boot space by 13 litres).

The 1.6 VTi Exclusive plus the option pack costs R209368 (including CO2 emissions tax).

A 1.6 VTi auto will be released by the end of 2010.

All Citroen C3 prices include a three-year or 100 000km warranty, a four-year or 60 000km service plan and three years of roadside assistance.
