Chev's new Camaro breaks cover

FRANKFURT, Germany - Chevrolet will unveil the new Camaro convertible and coupe at the 65th Frankfurt auto show in September. BumbleBee is looking good, yo.

The new model is the latest and most significant redesign of the fifth-generation concept first showcased in 2006. It features a low-slung silhouette and MyLink connected radio.

'ICONIC DESIGN'

Chevrolet Europe’s president and MD, Dr Thomas Sedran said: "Camaro has always been associated with iconic design, high performance and driving fun, and we are particularly proud of the new coupe and convertible models."

"They incorporate new high-tech features that add extra convenience and give customers even more value for their money,"

The automaker says the new Camaro has more efficient cooling abilities and stability at high speeds. On the styling front the front fascia has a wider lower grille and a narrower upper grille, a functional bonnet vent which helps reduce heat and aerodynamic lift. The rear features a sculptured boot lid, horizontal lights and a redesigned diffuser.

Under the bonnet there’s a 6.2-litre V8 engine mated to a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The auto version includes active fuel management and cam phasing (VVT). The manual unit makes 318kW at 5900rpm and 569Nm at 4600rpm. Zero to 100km/h takes 5.2 seconds for the manual coupe and 5.4secs for the convertible, says Chevrolet.

SPORTY FEATURES

Inside the car there’s standard remote keyless entry or customers can go for a remote engine start function on the auto model. Leather, adjustable Recaro sport bucket seats are optional in the coupe variant.

The new Chevrolet MyLink system allows users to open phone books, playlists and photo galleries. Connectivity will be provided through USB, Bluetooth and aux-in. There’s also voice recognition and text-to-speech functions, along with a standard rearview camera.

The new Camaro will reach European dealers by the end of 2013 with prices starting from the equivalent of about R563 000 for the coupe and R643 000 for the convertible in the UK.

According to Chevrolet, journalists described the car in 1966 as a "small vicious animal that eats Mustangs". It says the original Camaro was built around a unibody structure and a 3.9 straight-six engine.

The Camaro is also as American as apple pie and baseball. It has featured in several movies such as Runaway Bride (1999), A Walk To Remember (2003), and, Transformers (2007, 2009, 2011), in which the Camaro had a starring role as Bumblebee. A special, suped-up Camaro can be seen in the upcoming animation film, Turbo.

In March 2013, the most recent edition of the Camaro Z28 was unveiled at the New York auto show. It’s powered by a 7.0 V8 engine pushing out 373kW/637Nm.
