Chery adds autos to model mix

Chery is expanding its South African line-up by adding two automatic models to the range.

Automatic versions of the QQ3 hatchback and the J5 sedan are the first of five new models that will be introduced locally this year.

The entry-level QQ3 0.8 TX hatchback gains a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission called EZ Drive that allows for semi-automatic (or manual) and full automatic modes. And switching between the two modes is as simple as pressing the "auto" button next to the gear lever.

The three-cylinder 812 cc engine powering the auto' QQ3 is Euro 3 compliant and produces 38 kW at 6 000 r/min and 70 Nm of torque between 3 500 and 4 000 r/min.

According to the carmaker, the QQ3 returns an average of 5.2 l/100 km (albeit in test conditions at an average speed of 90 km/h).

Hatchback or sedan?

In addition, the automatic version of the J5 sedan uses a four-speed transmission that drivers can use either in fully automatic mode or by manually selecting gears by moving the gearlever back- or forwards.

The J5 range is powered by a Euro 3 compliant 2.0-litre four cylinder engine producing 95 kW at 5 500 r/min and peak torque of 178 Nm at 4 500 r/min.

It also takes the highest specification level offered on the J5 range and comes with dual airbags, power steering, power windows, leather upholstery, air conditioning, an adjustable steering column, multifunction trip computer and a six-disc CD changer.
