Cape Town - Audi’s second-generation Q5 will arrive in South Africa in 2017.

The new model is set to take on local SUV stalwarts such as the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Audi says its all-new Q5 will be more upmarket and refined when it reaches SA next year.

The new SUV won't be a huge departure from the outgoing model and will feature roughly the same proportions. This does not mean that the new SUV will be dull to look at. Its styling is more angular and assertive borrowing design elements from its siblings such as the new Audi A4.

Athletic appeal

It features a prominent hexagonal grille, slimmer LEDs and triple-slat air intakes. The second-generation Q5 will mark a switch to the VW Group’s MLB platform which, in effect, is the same mechanical make-up that is used in the already popular MQB set-up.

Audi says it has shaved as much as 100kg off its next-gen Q5 compared to its predecessor.

In terms of engines, a range of petrol and diesel derivatives will be on offer.

The Q5 will share the same engines as the new A4, that a 2.0-litre petrol engine will feature alongside a 2.0-litre oil burner - as in the A4. It remains to be seen what gearboxes will be standard and optional – the six-speed manual, seven-speed S-tronic DCT, or eight-speed automatic.

Other engine choices can be found in the SQ5 and RS Q5, with both being powered by Audi’s 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine; with the latter said to produce more than 300kW

Expect the Audi Q5 in SA during the first quarter of 2017.

Inside, Audi has completely overhauled the Q5's cabin with improved materials and luxury trim. The SUV will receive the latest version of Audi’s navigation system, incorporating Google Maps and the automaker's Virtual Cockpit (as seen in the new TT, R8 and A4).
