Like the open-top 3 Series that it replaces, the 4 Series Convertible has a retractable hardtop that can be lowered in 20 seconds at up to 18km/h (so you can keep moving in traffic when a Jozi thunderstorm strikes). There's 320 litres of boot space with the top raised, 220 when its folded.
TWO PETROL, ONE DIESEL
Compared to the 3 Series, the overall length at 4.6m has been extended (+26 mm) and the wheelbase increased to 2.8m (+50mm). The convertible also sits 10mm closer to road than the current 3 Series sedan.
The cars will be launched with two petrol (428i and 435i) and one diesel engine (420d) in South Africa. The flagship six-cylinder 3.0 435i is capable of 225kW/400Nm, the four-cylinder 2.0 428i produces 180kW/350Nm. The four-cylinder diesel 420d is capable of 135kW/380Nm. EAch drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or eight-speed sports auto with paddle shifts.
The list of options is substantial and there are three specifications/lines - Modern, Luxury, Sport - and M Sport package.
There’s a host of driver assistance systems, among them head-up display, pedestrian-spotter, active cruise control (with stop/go) and 3D satnav. According to BMW: “These innovations are available from the Connected Drive product range as standard or optional equipment for the BMW 4 Series Convertible and, for a limited time, some can even be ordered after the initial vehicle purchase.”
BMW's 4 Series Coupe will make its debut at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show.
