BMW's 2 Series Active Tourer for SA

The next model in the 2 Series range following on from the Coupe will be the Active Tourer and it’s just as sporty as its sibling, says BMW.

The 2 Series Active Tourer will arrive in South Africa in October 2014.

The automaker says there are new turbocharged engines with three and four cylinders and that the front-wheel drive unit is 4.3m long, 1.8m wide and 1.5m high.

ENGINES

The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is being launched three engine choices in the form of three and four-cylinder drive units that form part of a new generation of engines. South Africa will include only two, the 218i and 225i units.

The new three-cylinder petrol 218i unit - with a 1.5-litre displacement – mated to a six-speed manual gearbox pushes out 100kW and has a combined fuel consumption of 4.9 litres/100km and 115g/km CO2 emissions with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The range-topping, four-cylinder 225i unit makes 170kW and goes to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds along with a top speed of 235km/h. It has a combined fuel consumption of 6.0 litres/100km and 139g/km CO2 emissions.

BMW says the new developed chassis, comprises of a single-joint spring strut axle at the front and a multi-link rear axle. "The front drive axle has undergone extensive fine-tuning, ensuring that it endows the car with optimum driving dynamics and precise steering feedback."

The automaker says its EfficientDynamics technology elements include auto stop/start, brake energy regeneration, a gearshift Indicator and the integral air curtain, which uses two vertical air inlets in the front bumper to direct the airstream along the front wheels.

ROOMIER DIMENSIONS

The wheelbase measures 2.6m and it has a raised roofline, giving the "driver and front passenger a far higher seating position than in a sedan".

Inside, says BMW, the surfaces are horizontally structured in a layered look, along with a large optional glass roof.

In terms of looks there is the distinctive kidney grille at the front flanked by twin circular headlights. BMW Sys: “The crisp contours and an eye-catching line along the sides give added impact to the wheel arches and inject the Tourer with forward thrust even when stationary while the controls for the radio, air conditioning and air vents are angled towards the driver inside the vehicle.”

Boot space goes from 468 litres to 1510 litres when the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats are folded down. The sliding rear seat frees up more kneeroom or luggage space if required, along with a foldable boot floor that conceals a storage compartment with a handy multifunction tray.

EXTRA GOODIES

Two optional trim packages are also available in the form of the Sport Line and Luxury Line options.

The M Sport package that will be available from November, says BMW, will open up even greater scope for customisation. This includes a M Aerodynamics package, M Sport suspension and 17" or 18” light-alloy wheels. Inside there’s a M leather steering wheel and specially upholstered sports seats all-wheel-drive system.

BMW ConnectedDrive services and apps bring smartphone applications into the vehicle and allow innovative features like the Concierge Service or Real Time traffic information to be added.

More information will be released closer to the local launch in October 2014.
