The latest addition to the range is a six-cylinder unit using FSI direct injection and Audi's new valvelift technology that varies the valve lift based on the power demands.
Combined with a range of friction-reducing measures on many components, Valvelift is said to reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 %.
The V6 produces 154 kW and 280 Nm from 3 000 to 5 000 r/min. Acceleration from 0 - 100 km/h is a brisk 8 seconds, while the top speed for this luxury sedan is 238 km/h.
Cleanest in class
Audi claims fuel consumption of 8.3 l/100 km and CO2 emission of 199 g/km, which according to the manufacturer is the lowest in its class.
The new model is equipped with front wheel drive and Audi's Multitronic continuously variable transmission.
Being a member of the flagship range, the 2.8 FSI is also equipped with other trademarks including the use of Audi's Space Frame Technology, adaptive air suspension, decreased NVH levels and a host of safety and comfort features.
Audi SA has confirmed that the A8 2.8 FSI will not be coming to South Africa.
