Audi South Africa has added a model to its A3 family, the Cabriolet. The news follows hot on the heels of the arrival of the S3 sedan, according to a report by Wheel24 earlier in May.
The compact four-seater is sporty, elegant and multi-facted, says the automaker, and impresses at first glance with its flowing lines and soft top. It features a “systematic lightweight design, new engines and assistance systems”.

And there’s even more. Later in 2014, Audi will complete the range with the introduction of the high-performance S3 Cabriolet during the fourth quarter. It will feature the same 2.0T FSI engine available in its S3 siblings. Further information will be available closer to its local launch.
The A3 Cabriolet made its debut in South Africa in 2008 and has since sold 1260 units. The previous generation of the Audi A3 was the first to include the Cabriolet body, which is now translated to the third generation of the range.
The cars comes from Audi's plant in Gyor, Hungary, which has been expanded with an investment of the equivalent of more than R12.84-billion.
ENGINES
There will be two TFSI engines available in South Africa, 1.4T FSI (92 kW) and the 1.8T FSI (132 kW), the same units available in other A3 models. All engines in the new Audi A3 Cabriolet combine the technologies of direct injection, turbocharging and a start-stop-system. Both TFSI engines will be available in manual and S tronic.
The 1.4 TFSI reaches 100km/h in 10.2 seconds, has a claimed combined fuel consumption of 5.3 litres /100km and 124g/km of CO2 emissions.
The A3 Cabriolet 1.8T FSI will accelerate to 100km/h in 7.8 seconds with a combined fuel consumption of 5.8 litres /100 km.
LOOKING GOOD
The new A3 Cab has grown compared to the previous model because it's based on the Audi A3 Sedan. The automaker says its length has increased from 4.24 to 4.42m, its wheelbase from 2.58 to 2.60m and its width from 1.77 to 1.79m. Only its height (1.41 metres) was reduced by 15mm. Luggage space has increased by 60 litres to a total 320 litres.
The front of car is characterised by the Audi trademark singleframe grille and a more pronounced bonnet; LED headlights are optional. The windshield frame is aluminium – and an aluminium trim runs around the entire car. On the flanks, the design features a taut tornado line and contoured sheet-metal surfaces that, Audi says, create a fascinating interplay of light and shadow.
SOFT TOP
The cloth top stretches over a light kinematic mechanism made of magnesium-steel and opens electrically in 17 seconds while driving up to 50 km/h. The roof can be closed in 18 seconds.
The acoustic soft top has a glass rear window and has a thicker inner foam layer which further reduces the already low interior noise level of the A3 Cabriolet.
The top is available in three exterior colours - black, grey or brown, with its lining available in black or lunar silver and a wind deflector as standard on all A3 Cabriolet models.
The car is 50kg lighter, weighing in at 1345kg, despite its larger size and customers can choose from 13 pain colours.
The instrument panel is lean and low, the front slightly curved, the centre console angled towards the driver. The large, round air vents in jet design, the control panel for the aircon and the three-dimensional trim strips bring elegance into the interior, says Audi.
