Since its launch in 2000, 1944 Audi S3 hatchbacks have been sold in South Africa. Now the third-generation two-door S3 has arrived in SA with a four-door version, the S3 Sportback, to come in November 2013.

NEW ENGINE
The new S3 is 4.2m long, 1.7m wide, 1.4m tall and has a 2.5m wheelbase, 17mm more than its predecessor. The new S3 weighs 1395kg, 60kg less than its predecessor, yet is powered by a new four-cylinder 2.0 turbocharged engine capable of 206kW/380Nm that drives through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic auto to take the S3 to 100km/h in 4.8sec (5.2 manual) and on to a top speed of 250 km/h.
Fuel consumption in the auto is rated at 6.9 litres/100km (manual seven) with CO2 emissions of 159g/km.
The S3 carries the automaker’s S-specific grille with an aluminium finish and grey inlays. The new bumper has an aluminium-look with air inlets. It has xenon headlights and the rear bumper has been redesigned with a grey diffuser housing the chromed exhausts.
A large spoiler generates downforce on the rear axle and there is S-badging at the rear.
SPORTY INTERIOR
Much like its predecessor, the new S3 has a sporty interior with large air vents and decorative inlays either in aluminium or black. Boot capacity is 365 litres, seats folded 1100 litres. Standard kit includes 18” alloy rims, xenons, sport suspension, cruise control, auto-dimming rear view mirror, Bluetooth, stainless-steel pedals and S3 Sport seats in cloth/leather.
An S-specific feature is the tachometer, which now has a turbo-boost pressure indicator. The driver information system with rest recommendation is standard.
The optional leather steering wheel has been redesigned with a flat-bottomed rim that in S tronic guise carries aluminium shift paddles.
