Audi extends its A1 family with a five-door Sportback model in 2012.

The larger A1 shares the three-door’s design with its large single-frame grille, but measures 3.95m long and is several millimeters taller to allow more space for passengers seated in the rear. The Sportback rides on a 2.47m long wheelbase (same as the three-door) and comes standard with four seats, although a fifth seat is available.

The luggage capacity of 270 litres can be increased to 920 litres by folding down the split rear seatback. An optional compartment package provides useful storage compartments under the loading floor for even more packaging solutions.

The interior is also customisable, offering a list of colours and details for prospective owners to choose from.

FORCED INDUCTION

Audi’s A1 engine lineup of TFSI petrol and TDI turbodiesel engines are offered along with six-speed manual and seven-speed S tronic transmissions.

The suspension arrangement uses a McPherson strut at the front axle and a torsion beam rear axle and the chassis, according to Audi, has been tuned for agility. Once again, Ingolstadt’s S line sport suspension is an option for owners requiring more sporty driving characteristics.

Safety equipment includes six airbags, Isofix anchor points for child safety seats and Audi’s headrest system along with LED daytime running lights and tail lights.

High-end equipment options include Audi’s MMI navigation plus system with voice control and a 6.5 inch monitor that folds out from the instrument panel.

The A1 Sportback will be launched in 2012.
