HIROSHIMA, Japan - Mazda revealed its fourth-generation Mazda2 on Thursday (July 17) as production of its latest hatchback began at its Hofu factory in Hiroshima, Japan.

The new Mazda2, based on the Hazumi concept, is powered by the automaker's SkyActiv technology and "Kodo – Soul of Motion" design language. More than 2.4-million Mazda2 units (also sold as the Demio) have been sold globally since it was first launched in 1996.

The Mazda2 joins its similarly Kodo designed siblings siblings – the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3.

According to the automakers, the new hatchback is expected to raise the bar in the crucial B segment, Europe's largest in terms of market share.

The hatchback is powered by a new member of Mazda's SkyActiv engine family - the 77kW/250Nm 1.5 SkyActiv-D diesel and, depending on the market, petrol versions of its 1.5 SkyActiv-G.

Each can be mated to either a six-speed manual or auto with stop/start technology and brake energy regeneration.

The new model has SkyActive body and chassis. Inside it benefits from a "spacious and refined interior", the automaker's MZD Connect multimedia system and i-ActivSense safety.

Mazda SA could not confirm when the new 2 might reach u.

Can't wait! I have the current Mazda 2 and I love it! This looks slightly more mature :)

The 6 and 3 were out last year already. Mazda SA is not intrested in bringing it in. I fear the wait for the M2 maybe a long one

Mazda 3 finish 2nd in the World Car of the Years awards, and we do not have it here in SA. I saw it 7 months ago already in Europe. The 6 has been out for over a year and still nothing from Mazda SA.

    ....was it designed by Hyundai?

Like all new generation Mazda's, it looks really good and promising. Now all Mazda needs in SA is; 1.) Marketing, and 2.) A Dealer footprint.

No mazda 2 3 and 6 for SA. Mazda not interested in launching the models here at least not this year. Maybe in 2016.
