The VW Amarok Wörthersee single-cab concept, a muscular giant of a bakkie that's 5.25m long, 2.22m wide and powered by a V6, three-litre, 200kW turbodiesel engine, is the focus of VW's commercial stand at the 2013 Johannesburg motor show.

It was first shown in May 2013 at the GTI Festival in Wörthersee, Austria.

An XL load box, six-cm wheel-arch extensions and the whole body lowered by 80mm make it, well, authoritative, and the V6 TDI's 600Nm of torque is  distributed through an eight-speed autobox to all wheels. The 0-100km/h sprint is achieved in 7.9sec, not bad for a truck with a cargo area that can take two Euro pallets.

TRACES OF GTI

The imposing shell rides on 22" wheels rolling on 295/35 rubber. The rear carries a carbon diffuser and two chromed tail pipes below darkened diode-lit tail lights made only for the Amarok Wörthersee.

There are traces of Golf GTI in black, red and white on the door trim, bucket seats, sport steering wheel and extra-wide centre console that is covered with black carbon leather and nubuck. The accents involve red stitching and 'brushed' aluminium.

Gauges in the well are surrounded by black leather; the instrument panel carries torque and the boost data, a stop-watch and acceleration timer. As expected from such a show car, this Amarok has a tailored sound system with an infotainment system using a 20cm touchscreen with two 380W speakers, amplifier, and a 500W sub-woofer.
