The Lexus LS first appeared in 1989 and continued to lead the automaker's sedan charge for the last three decades. The LS's had a goal of being Lexus' most luxurious car with strong levels of comfort and serenity.

Akio Toyoda, chief branding officer and master driver at Lexus, says about the LS: "It's a model that gives rise to transformation through the spirit of constant innovation and by providing new technologies and value for the times."

In the 31 years that the car's been on sale, more than 87 million units were sold globally, and the sixth-generation LS will look to continue the trend. Sadly, the market for sedans are dwindling, so the LS is unlikely to sell in as strong numbers as before.

'High-quality driving'

Glenn Crompton, vice president of Toyota South Africa for marketing and Lexus sales, says: "In pursuing high-quality driving performance, which is the starting point of the LS, Lexus thoroughly addressed every detail of the components and control systems related to driving performance, including quietness and ride comfort, ranging, for example, from the internal structure of the tyres to the feel experienced when sitting in the seats and the acceleration response in daily driving."

The current Lexus LS 500 and F-Sport are powered by a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine offering 310kW and 600Nm, and Lexus plans to extend the local range with the introduction of the new LS.

The new Lexus LS, to be unveiled in Japan late this year, is expected to arrive in South Africa early in 2021.
