The new features have been introduced for the South African specification Lexus LS 430 as a running change, effective January 2004.
One of the new features is "Lexus Park Assist", an advanced technology that assists the driver to park the vehicle using six ultrasonic sensors mounted in the front bumper and four in the rear bumper.
Also new is Lexus AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System). This allows the high output low-beam module to swivel in concert with the steering to see "around corners" at low speed.
Low beam only
However, unlike the units fitted as options on BMW and Mercedes cars, it does not operate on high beam.
A significant upgrade for the LS 430 is a six-speed Super ECT automatic transmission.
The closer ratios contribute to improved acceleration, smoother gearshifts, and quieter and more fuel efficient high speed cruising.
The new six-speed transmission is virtually the same size and weight as the five-speed unit it replaces, and features a manual shift option..
Added protection for front seat occupants comes in the form of knee airbags for the driver and front passenger.
Minor interior changes include a revised instrument cluster, swing type reading lamps, and a large illuminated vanity mirror.
Exterior changes include a new design for the 17 inch alloy wheels and a revision to the front and rear views with new front and rear light clusters and bumper treatments.
At the front the styling changes include revised wheelarches, bonnet, and grille components.
The Lexus LS430 is fitted with a 4.3-litre quad camshaft VVTi 32 valve V8 engine producing 207 kW at 5 600 r/min and 417 Nm at 3 500 r/min. It accelerates from 0 - 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
