According to DaimlerChrysler South Africa the Grand Cherokee Black Pearl Edition takes the "go anywhere, do anything" ethos of Jeep to a sportier level with a new chrome grille, interior fitments and detailing.
A two-tone leather steering wheel hints at the vehicle's undeniable athleticism, while black Microtech wooden inserts on the dash, door panels and centre console replace the California Redwood Burl units found on the standard Overland.
Just 145 of these Black Pearl Edition models will be built - in both 2.7L CRD and 4.7L V8 derivatives.
This new high-output CRD motor remains mechanically identical to the 5-cylinder unit doing duty in the Grand Cherokee Laredo 2.7L CRD but a new engine control module has altered the operating parameters of the vehicle's engine management system, changing timing, retardation, fuel supply and turbo waste gate opening pressures.
DCSA claims that the result is a 25% power hike, a substantial 12.5% increase in torque and a "marked improvement in performance, flexibility and top speed".
