16-year-old Joshwin Bock from Cloetesville is a young man of very few words but his passion for cars and motorsport speaks volumes.

The journey started when local actress Leatitia Solomons, also known for her TV series Leatitia Se Taxi on DSTV, met Andre Bezuidenhout from Team Perfect Circle at a Women's Day event recently. The team is participating in the legendary Kyalami 9 Hour event taking place this weekend. The historic race makes its return to Kyalami after a 37-year hiatus, and is the final round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

Bezuidenhout was inspired by Solomons' work within her Stellenbosch community and wanted to do something to inspire the youth as well. The team was then on the lookout for a young person with a massive interest in cars. After consulting with various teachers in schools, Joshwin's name popped up twice when asked who the biggest petrolhead in one of the schools was and it was then that the wheels was set in motion for the hard-working Grade 10 pupil from Cloetesville High School.

A dream come true

Joshwin's teacher, Raiza Crombie or better known as ReeCee says: "Joshwin is very quiet but also a very loving child. And, I am also a car-lover, so as a language teacher you are constantly searching for topics to make learners more interested in your subject and to make the projects they have to do more enjoyable and relatable for them. So I have used cars quite a lot in our work assignments.

"I first came to realise his in-depth passion for cars right in the beginning of the year when the class' subject for an oral assignment was 'Where do I see myself in five years'. And so his passion was constantly a reminder throughout the year. Then during the third quarter of the year, he designed a poster for a car festival and I thought it was so special as you could really see the effort he had put into it, and just how much his passion for cars really is underlined.
"Joshwin said he wants to be a mechanic, and the rest of his classmates laughed at him because everyone else aims high and wants to be doctors and lawyers, but then he said to them he wants to be a mechanic because "when you enjoy what you do, you never have to work a day in your life".

"So when the stars aligned and Leatitia mentioned they were looking for an aspiring petrolhead, I knew that Joshwin was the most deserving of this opportunity.

"Other than his passion for cars, he is very humble, and a very grateful child. For example there won't be a day that will go by during this entire time that he'll be in Joburg, that he won't message me every day and say "Dankie Juffrou, I appreciate you".

Joshwin's dad, Jonathan Williams, is a watchmaker in Stellenbosch and says Joshwin has always loved cars from a very young age: "I used to own a BMW E30, and he's around me whenever there are cars involved. I hope that when he comes home this experience will inspire him to go into a career in motoring. So hopefully he will want to do well at school to study mechanical or electrical engineering.

Joshwin's parents themselves have never even been to Cape Town International airport, and Joshwin has no idea that his parents will be flying up on Saturday as well to join him at this iconic event.

Williams says: "I just want to thank Andre so much, for everything he has done for our son with this amazing dream come true. It's so heartwarming to know there are such good people around who can change people's lives with one kind gesture. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

"We are delighted to have Joshwin joining us. I was 8-years-old when I experienced a life changing event being the Kyalami 9 Hour in 1969. I was inspired by motorsport heroes and we sincerely hope that Joshwin will have a great experience to take away from Kyalami," says Bezuidenhout.

Wheels24 spoke to Joshwin, who is currently in Johannesburg attending the event. Here's what he had to say about his experience thus far:

Wheels24: At what age did your passion for cars begin?

Joshwin Bock: From very small already. My dad always took me with him to Killarney, and the pitch in Kraaifontein. We went almost every Sunday after my Dad finished work. He also takes me along to local car shows.

W24: How did you feel when you heard that you are going to Johannesburg to watch the Kyalami 9 Hour?

JB: I was very excited. It is the very first time I got on a aeroplane and travelled to Johannesburg. I am very fortunate to come and watch these races.

W24: Is there any car that stands out for you at the track?

JB: Yor, a BMW is my favourite car but here at the track there are so many kwaai cars. If I had to choose, Porsche is the best at the moment.

W24: Is there anything you would like to say about the event?

JB: I am so grateful to Uncle Andre that made this possible for me. Not many people would ever get this opportunity and I will remember this for the rest of my life.
