Peugeot confirm hypercar entry for Le Mans in 2022

French manufacturer Peugeot announced on Wednesday that it will compete again at Le Mans from 2023.

Peugeot pulled out of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in January 2012 citing a "challenging economic environment in Europe" but is now ready to return for the 2022 season which culminates in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2023.

"Proud to announce our participation in the world's premier endurance racing championship WEC from 2022 with a Hybrid Power Hypercar," the French marque tweeted.

Peugeot's last stay in the sport was short-lived in spite of chalking up considerable success.

After 14 years away, they returned in 2007 and went on to take first and second in the 2009 Le Mans.

"I am very excited at the prospect of channeling the skills and passion of my team into this project," said Peugeot's motorsport director Jean-Marc Finot

"It is a new challenge and I know our experts will rise to it with another demonstration of their will to win."
