King Price Xtreme debuts its superbike team at Zwartkops

King Price xtreme (KPx) motorsport had their first taste of a tough season ahead for their 2020 Bridgestone Superbikes National Challenge Series team during the season-opening race at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria on 2 February.

The team consists of Clint Seller, reigning SA Superbike champion, Dino Iozzo, and newcomer Sfiso Themba.

The previous season ended on a high note for KPx, with Seller walking off with the national title, Iozzo winning the final race of the season, and Temba attracting attention in the highly competitive Kawasaki ZX-10R Masters Cup.

Themba, who has only started riding bikes seven years ago, was named rookie of the year in 2017.

Changed for the better

Themba told Wheels24: “The one thing I like about the sport is that there are no favours - you have to work for your success. It has forced me to change my attitude, change my eating habits… it has changed me for the better. I like the way I am now.”

An unfortunate spill on the second lap of the first heat dashed Seller’s hopes to win the day (the honours went to RPM Center Race Team’s David McFadden), but team mate Iozzo made up for it by winning his heat, while Themba steadily turned the heat in the Masterclass by improving his time with each round.

Siyamthanda Williams, brand development manager for King Price, says: “This year we’ve taken things to the next level, and we’re ready for King Price xtreme to be known to supersport fans as the team behind the adrenaline rush.”

Seller confirmed the value of KPx’s commitment: “A big part of my success last year was the partnership with King Price xtreme. Running a racing team is a lot of work, and having them in our corner took a lot of stress away, and allowed us to focus on what we do best.”

The extreme side

As its name suggests, King Price xtreme is all about the extreme side of wheeled sports. Apart from the superbike team, the brand is also heavily involved in karting and off-road racing: It sponsors leading off-roader Schalk Burger, who this year missed out on the iconic Dakar race due to injury.

King Price’s growing involvement with motorbike racing has mirrored its development of its bike insurance portfolio. The company started offering motorbike cover in 2019, which includes unusual offerings such as the ability for bikers to insure their biking gear for just R1.00 extra and cover for accidental damage that happens at approved track circuits.
