It’s been a long time coming, but after years of planning and red tape, the Killarney International Raceway (KIR) will play host to some of the most ferocious sports cars in South Africa.
On 14 March 2020, Killarney is hosting GHC Racing Drift Outlaws and RACESA who will stage one of the biggest events on SA’s drifting and drag racing calendar, Bragging Rights CPT. Drifters Juan Stemmet and Shane Green will continue their very personal rivalry while giving the crowd something to cheer about. And adding further fuel to the fire is the Pro Mods that will be gracing the track, come the event.
Those who are aware of the Pro Mods, or pro-modified race cars, will know that these drag cars only need 400m to breach the 300km/h mark. And this poses a challenge because the Killarney drag strip cannot accommodate such monstrous speeds, due to the stopping distance after the 400m mark not being long enough.
Therefore, it was decided, by the organising team, that the Pro Mods will only run over 200m, giving drivers enough time to bring the cars to a stop. And given that some of these race cars can produce more than 3000HP (2237kW), each 200m run could be completed in four seconds.

Approval from City of Cape Town
Because the Killarney Raceway is surrounded by residential areas, Bragging Right’s CPT organisers, led by Raziek Rajah, got KIR to file for special permission to have the Pro Mods race at the track. As it stands, the City of Cape Town allows for a noise level of up to 108 decibels. The Pro Mods, however, far exceed this.
In an exclusive interview with Wheels24, Rajah said: "When I tied up with RaceSA to bring Bragging Rights to Cape Town, we engaged with KIR and, most importantly, the City of Cape Town to support this far-fetched initiative of having pro mods on KIR."

Far-fetched it may have been, but after two years of sound planning, the fruits of their labour will be reaped. The City of Cape Town agreed to a noise exemption that allows the Pro Mods to run at full tilt. This exemption will see the noise level for the event increase to accommodate these amazing vehicles. Rajah applauded the City of Cape Town's events department for supporting motor racing in a controlled and safe environment.

Blistering speeds
Those attending the event this coming Saturday will have to keep a close eye on the track, because the Pro Mods only need 1 - 1.5 seconds to clear the 0-100km/h sprint. This will be one of the biggest attractions of having these cars at the event. The speeds will entice and excite show-goers, giving everyone a rush to see these vehicles speeding down the track’s main straight.
Rajah said: "We have invited some of the fastest and craziest builds SA has to offer. The Megladon is a +2000HP (1491kW) Toyota Supra, driven by Craig Czank. The JUDGE is a 10-litre twin-turbo machine that boasts more than 3000HP, driven by Riaan Meyer. This, to car people, will be like sitting in an Oprah house listening to Mozart at his best."

Motorsport fans in Cape Town will be excited at the prospect of these racing cars gracing their 'backyard.' To some, witnessing a Pro Mod in action for the first time will be one for the ages, while others will share their knowledge on it with anyone willing to listen.
Rajah and his team of organisers went the extra mile to ensure that Cape Town finally stages the Pro Mods. Rajah said to Wheels24 that he and his team can't guarantee that all Pro Mod invitees will be able to attend, but Cape Town will see Pro Mods in action. And with Killarney and City of Cape Town’s full support, those in attendance can brace themselves for a top-class event.
