VW shuffles 2014 SA rally line-up

UITENHAGE, Eastern Cape - The 2014 South African National Rally season will open on March 14 with the first of the eight rounds being the Tour Natal Rally in Durban.

The Volkswagen factory team will field three cars in the S2000 category, the top class of National rallying.

VW SA motorsport head Mike Rowe said: “The team for the 2014 season has been carefully selected to create a strong and balanced challenge for the championship. We have made a careful selection of talent and experience to create a team that is young, energetic and holds significant promise for the future.”

TALENTED COMPETITOR

VWSA says Henk Lategan will again campaign a Polo S2000, building on his first season (2013) with the team when he proved himself a talented competitor. Pierre Arries will take up his place in the navigator's seat alongside Lategan, creating a promising combination of talent and experience.

Barry White, who played an important part in Lategan's rapid growth as a rally racer in 2013, fulfills a non-competitive role with the team in 2014.

Lategan and Arries will be joined by Gugu Zulu and Carl Peskin who will move up from the S2000 Challenge category, trading in their S2000 Challenge entry for the action of the premier class, says VWSA.

Hans Weijs Jnr and Björn Degandt, who contested the 2012, season will return again for 2014.

Rowe said: “Hans and Björn were very competitive from the start on unfamiliar territory and ended 2012 with us by winning the Garden Route Rally. “Their presence during the 2012 season gained the local rally championship a lot of attention from Europe.

"Returning to the field in 2014 should provide another boost for our local profile and they will add diversity and interest to our championship.”
