V8 Tourers headed for SA

An African Touring Car racing formula, based on Australia's V8 Touring Car series, will be held in South Africa in 2013.

A group of SA motorsport competitors have concluded a deal with Australian design company Pace Innovations to design the first African Touring Car. Having obtained permission from Motorsport South Africa to promote the new series, the group will build the series in 2013.

The car will feature a control chassis fitted with a V8 engine capable of 410kW, a transaxle gearbox and double-wishbone front and rear suspension.

HEADED FOR THE REST OF AFRICA

The body of the car will be the same as the road going models such as the Ford Focus sedan and Chevrolet Cruze. The only difference being the wheel diameter and width, the rear wing and front splitter.

The car will be demonstrated to potential buyers and the aim is to field 20 cars on the grid by the end of 2013.

Multiple South African champion Gary Formato drove a V8 SuperTourer earlier in 2012.

Formato said: "The cars are really fast, and exciting to drive. I am sure that all local racing drivers who try the prototype will love it."

"What we are bringing is a cost-effective, spectacular, sustainable way to go motor racing. This concept of motor racing is working all over the world, it provides an opportunity for competitors to drive an exciting, powerful real racing car providing good value for marketing partners and spectacular racing for spectators."

Formato said: "Once established, we shall aim to showcase the formula in Africa, where we already have interest, it should be a major draw card and allow countries to promote themselves utilising the television package that is being negotiated he said”.
