It will be driven by British rally champion Mark Higgins, who holds the current record of 19min56.7 set in 2011 in a previous-generation Subaru WRX STI. Higgins achieved an average speed of 185km/h.

As for the previous record, the Subaru will be a standard Subaru unit with a 220kW 2.5-litre turbo boxer engine, unmodified brake callipers and road-legal tyres.

BUMPS AND JUMPS

The springs and shock-absorbers have, however, been modified to minimise any potential damage when the car encounters the the track's many bumps – and jumps – at high speed.

The WRX STI will also have a roll-cage, race harness and fire suppression system.

Subaru will complete three timed runs under closed-road conditions on May 31 ,  June 2 and June 4 2014. The road on the island has no speed limit.

Higgins created one of the most memorable race videos when he had a self-described "moment" at the bottom of Bray Hill at 240km/h – clips of the attempt have received almost 10-million views online since 2011.

Higgins said: “Setting the record was a highlight of my career – Bray Hill certainly added to the thrill! As a Manxman (a native of the Isle of Man), I love the TT races and I have huge respect for the TT motorcycle riders.”

The new Subaru WRX  will be available in South Africa from June 2014.
