SA team scores at Nurburg 24hr

Double Volkswagen Cup champion Mathew Hodges (27) scored the most important win of his career when he and Saxon Motorsport team mates Nick Barrow, Jamie Morrow and Dave Cox took an emphatic class win in the Zurich Nurburgring 24-hour race which finished on Monday afternoon (May 20, 2013).

The 41st running of the 'world’s toughest race' around the 25km track affectionately called the 'Green Hell' lived up to its name when heavy rain and thick fog in the Eifel Mountains forced the red flag to come out during the night into the race, causing a delay of over 10-hours.

Driving a three-litre twin turbo BMW 135d, Hodges qualified fastest of his three team mates and the team was looking for a top 40 finish due to the fact the car could do a two-hour stint before refuelling. Unfortunately the stoppage put paid to their hopes as the advantage was lost.

The car ran faultlessly and led its class for most of the race. At the end they were classified 107th out of the original 179 starters.

Mercedes won the race for the first time with the Black Falcon team Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 of Bernd Schneider, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Sean Edwards and Nicki Thiim.
