MONZA, Italy - A long-standing partnership involving two motorsport legends will re-ignite when a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car makes its debut wrapped in iconic Martini Racing stripes.
The appearance will be part of vermouth-maker Martini’s 150th anniversary celebration and the car will be driven by nine-times World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb in the first round of the Porsche Supercup in Catalunya, Barcelona, on Sunday May 12, as part of the Spanish F1 GP weekend.
'OFFICIAL PARTNER'
Throughout the 1970's, the heyday of 911 race cars, Martini Racing was Porsche's factory team and won in every GT series and in international prototype racing. Martini Racing's prototypes included early 911 RSRs, the 934 and 935. Martini backed Porsche in its sports-car endeavours in the 1970s, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1971, 1976, and 1977.
The brand is an “official partner” of the racing series which runs as a support series on the Formula 1 bill; the distinctive dark blue, light blue and red stripes have not been used since 2008.
Though most noted for his rally record, Loeb (39) is no stranger to race circuits; he drove in multi-discipline championships with the same determination and courage as he does off-road.
He will drive in the three-pronged promotional Porsche Supercup campaign in Catalunya (May 12) and Monaco (May 26).
'CLASSIC PERIOD'
A second driver, yet to be named, will drive the Porsche for Round 3 - at Martini’s home circuit, Monza in Italy - on September 8.
Jonas Krauss, head of Porsche Supercup, said: “Since the first day the stripes of Martini Racing decorated a Porsche 906 in 1968 the illustrious pairing has gone on to claim some of motorsport’s most coveted titles, including numerous Le Mans 24-Hour titles, during what is now considered to be a classic period of motorsport.”
