WELKOM, South Africa - Tasmin Pepper was the hero of Round 6 of the VW Cup at Phakisa Freeway near Welkom on Saturday (03 August) as Pepper Racing enjoyed a tremendously satisfying day.
Driving her turquoise Polo Vivo, the petite 23-year old ex-karter from Midrand made her intentions clear from practice and qualified fourth-fastest to get into the all important top-six draw for grid position and score pole for the opening race and fourth for Race 2.
Durban’s Shaun la Reservee was second-fastest and Lady Luck smiled on him, maybe even gave him a seductive wink, as he took fourth place in Race 1 and second for Race 2. He won at this event in 2012 and was confident about his chances.
FIRST LADY
Pepper judged the start to perfection as Reservee hesitated and it was the Midrand lass who led out of the first corner. She never put a tyre wrong as she gradually pulled away to win by 1.5sec and become the first woman to win a round of the series.
Her cause was helped by a race-long scrap for second which saw Kosie Weyers and Mathew Hodges demote Reservee to fourth in the closing stages. Bland came home fifth after what he described as "a close race".
Reservee started Race 2 two from second and held it through the eight laps. A bit of difficulty with gear selection saw Tasmin Pepper come home a frustrated fifth. “A couple of times I was lined up to passbut couldn’t get into gear,” she explained afterwards.
Reservee’s second was enough to give him the overall win for the day, Pepper was third. Reservee said afterwards: “I tried, but just couldn’t get close enough to Dewald (Brummer) to try pass him, but I’m happy with the result."
Next stop will be Zwartkops, Pretoria on August 31 2013.
