Renault returns to SA racing

Renault South Africa has announced its return to the country’s race tracks where it, along with Big Boss Auto, will field a Megane RS.

The Megane RS 250 will join the SA production car championship in Class T with Devin Robertson, the defending Polo Cup champion.

Devin was expected to line up in the racing Megane at a Zwartkops meet in May, but it was announced at the official team reveal on July 25, 2012 that the two will, instead, make their track debut at Welkom’s Phakisa Raceway on August 4.

BIG BOSS AUTO CONNECTION

Big Boss Auto was also appointed as the official local racing partner.

Said co-founder Justin Robertson (and uncle to Devin) about the tie-up: “We wanted to team up with a top quality brand not currently involved in motor racing … our approach to Renault came at just the right time.

“Following that first discussion, (brother) Wayne and I were really keen for something to happen with Renault. Fortunately Renault came back to us, visited our premises to inspect what we do and how we do it and we had the makings of a great partnership.

“They provided us with our first Mégane street car and within two hours of fetching it, it was on the track undergoing testing.

“This is a very exciting partnership and we would to thank Xavier Gobille, (outgoing) managing director of Renault SA and his team for their vote of confidence in the Big Boss Auto team,” Justin added.

DEVELOPING YOUNG DRIVERS

Renault SA also used the opportunity to reveal early details of its Sandero Trophy Cup development series.

Seen as a more affordable step up from the karting and single-seater racing scenes, Renault Motorsport SA will own and run a fleet of racing Sanderos that will be made available to drivers on a race-per-race basis.

The regional series will be hosted as part of the Northern Regions championships in the modified oroduction car championship until there are sufficient entries to qualify it to be run as a separate series.
