Dirt-bike Dirco's KZN hat trick

Teenager Dirco van der Westhuizen (Yamaha) has followed consecutive wins in Round 3 of Motorsport SA’s National Motocross championship in Gauteng in July with a hat trick of High School 125 class wins in the North v South Inter-Provincial in Bloemfontein.

Despite riding with a hip injured in a severe practice crash the previous week, the 14-year-old Voortrekker High School pupil dominated all three races and was one of the star attractions at the two-day meeting that attracted the season’s biggest event entry of 256 riders.

POOR START - TO WIN

He qualified first on Friday, 2.5sec ahead of Cape Town’s Dylan Stokes (KTM) and three faster than Gauteng’s Nicholas Phelps. He got the hole shot into the first corner and went on to win Race 1 by a comfortable 10sec.

Race 2 on Saturday saw the KZN rider recover from third at the start to overtake Phelps and Stokes in the first two laps and go on to win – again by 10sec. He overcame a poor start in the afternoon’s Race 3 - fifth into the first corner - to head the field at the end of lap one and again take the chequered flag with a 10sec advantage.

He also rode in one of the MX2 races for riders 15 years and older on 250 four-stroke and 125 two-stroke machines (compared to the High School class for riders aged 13-17 on 125 two-stroke machines) and finished an impressive ninth out of 28.

“I’m very happy with the weekend’s results,” he said. “I hurt a hip quite badly and we only decided on the Wednesday to compete in Bloemfontein. I entered the MX2 race, open to any rider aged 15 or older, to get some experience against older and more experienced riders on faster bikes.”

Westhuizen will next be in action in Round 4 of the MSA National championship in his home town, Pietermaritzburg, on September 22 2013
