World premiere at JHB: Super Merc

2008-10-30 06:31

Mercedes-Benz promised us a world premiere at JIMS, but how many guessed it would be the awesome SL 65 AMG Black Series?

Evil twin to the already impressive SL 65 AMG, the Black Series is a treat for sports car enthusiasts and is being shown for the first time at the Johannesburg International Motor Show, which opens to the media on Thursday.

A product of the AMG Performance Studio, the SL 65 AMG Black Series's 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine develops a maximum output of 493 kW at 5 200 r/min and 1 000 Nm of torque between 2 200 and 4 200 r/min. But get this - torque is electronically limited to 1 000 Nm and the madcap AMG engineers are convinced the biturbo V12 is good for another 200 Nm…
Added to the reality that this car, thanks mostly to an abundance of carbon fibre body panels, is 250 kg lighter than the standard SL65 AMG, getting up to speed should not be a problem then.

Mercedes claims a 0 - 100 km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds and a top speed limited electronically to 320 km/h.

The two-seater is produced in very limited quantities with first deliveries from November, although there has been no word as to how many of these menacing SLs will find themselves in South Africa.

JIMS update: Fourteen units of the SL 65 AMG Black Series are available in South Africa. Of the 14, the first four have already been sold for R3.9 million. The remaining 10 cost R4.2 million.

Wheels24 is at the Johannesburg International Motor Show. Check back regularly for updates and video footage straight from the show floor. The show opens to the public from Saturday November 1.
