Chevrolet’s latest Camaro wowed bow-tie muscle car

Chevrolet’s latest Camaro wowed bow-tie muscle car fans at JIMS. With a blend of perfectly proportioned long-nose V8 styling and contemporary detailing it was the highlight of GM’s display.

It might only be arriving locally in 2010, but the Chev Camaro is one of the undeniable JIMS show-stoppers.

American muscle car retro design can be a delicate process, quite easy to misjudge considering the fanatical support and strong heritage at play.

Chevrolet has done practically everything correctly with the Camaro design, proportions are perfect and there is just enough 60s and 70s styling hints to ensure it has the requisite bow-tie muscle car DNA.

Inside a pair of deeply recessed instrument binnacles, with round gauges in square housings, is a nod to classic Camaro design without the ergonomic foibles of yore.

A powerhouse 314 kW, 6.2l V8 engine generating 553Nm of torque features high-flow cylinder heads for good low-end torque and strong top-end power. In automatic guise it delivers 298 kW/535Nm and includes GM's fuel-saving Active Fuel Management system, enabling it to cruise on only four cylinders during light load conditions.

Suspension is thoroughly contemporary too, with a double ball-joint multilink front and 4.5-link independent rear suspension.

Thanks to its billing as the Transformers movie car it has star appeal too. Just a shame we’ll have to wait so long for it to arrive locally.
