Euro debut for sexy new Veloster

EASY ON THE EYES: Hyundai’s new Veloster will add to the Korean automaker’s line-up of good looking vehicles when it is launched in 2012.
Hyundai has been producing gorgeous cars over the past two years. Now a new crossover hatchback/coupe will join the Sonata, Elantra and (most recently in SA) new Accent… it's the new Veloster.

The new model has just had its European debut and, according to the Korean automaker, will bring "emotional appeal" to the brand… and just look it, it’s hard to argue when a vehicle looks that good. But what’s under the metal? Well, three doors - and a big boot lid. Huh? Yes, two doors on the passenger side and a driver's door on the other, changing according to right or left-hand drive markets, unlike the Mini with the double door opening into the traffic....

Duh!

The Veloster will be available in two trim levels (standard and sport variant) while both will be powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, generating 103kW. The engine will be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or Hyundai’s first dual-clutch auto.

YEP, A REAL THREE-DOOR

Hyundai’s Blue Drive technologies, featuring stop/start technology and low-rolling resistance tyres, will feature on the Veloster with the promise of competitive CO2 emissions of 137g/km and a combined fuel economy of less than six litres/100km.

The three-door coupe looks great and incorporates Hyundai’s new flowing design language. Hyundai hopes to carve a new niche for itself in the hatchback segment with launch of its new Velostar scheduled for early 2012.

Standard features include 17" alloy rims, a touchscreen media centre, auto aircon, reversing sensors and diode daytime running lights.

DESIGN LANGUAGE: Hyundai has focused on delivering great-looking vehicles and the Veloster doesn't disappoint.

The Veloster Sport benefits from 18" alloys with colour inserts, black leather upholstery (front pair heatable), a sunroof, cruise control, keyless entry and sporty alloy pedals.

A media pack, containing a touchscreen satnav with rear view parking camera, a seven-speaker sound sytem and a red leather interior are available as options on the Sport.

Tony Whitehorn, MD of Hyundai Motor UK says: “The new Veloster will bring added emotional appeal to the Hyundai brand. It showcases a sleek and distinctive design in an innovative three-door coupe form that provides practicality and individuality as well as dynamic performance.

“We expect the Veloster’s unique combination to re-shape its segment and attract new buyers.”

On sale in the UK in February 2012, prices will start from the equivalent of R224 000 and will offered with Hyundai’s five-year warranty. South Africa will have the cars most likely in the first quarter of 2012 with the 103kW, 1.6-litree GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine.
